Typically when you hear the word “sustainable” in fashion, you probably think; “boring, plain, and something that deserves to sit on a store rack untouched. Sustainable fashion has elevated to fashionable, ready to wear styles while using innovative approaches to lessening carbon footprints and chemical load.

Founder Taylor Jay, established the namesake, as a sustainable, fashion brand in 2012 right in the heart of Oakland, CA. Her vision “We envision a healthy, positive, and welcoming world in which women can thrive and grow without limits. That is why we produce clothing that can be integrated with any lifestyle, has a strong lifetime value, and can safely be reabsorbed into the environment.”

Inclusivity is as important to Taylor Jay as is creating and designing sustainable women’s wear. She wanted to ensure that the Taylor Jay brand catered to all women’s body types. Each piece is made adaptable to most body types using a variety of textiles, which fits most sizes favorably.

Why is sustainable fashion important?

Today’s sustainable fashion is more than just about fashionable pieces. It’s about transforming business models and practices that improve, and or reduce overall environmental impacts and factory conditions.

Green Strategy conducted a study that revealed, more than 50% of the emissions from clothing production comes from three phases: dyeing and finishing (36%), yarn preparation (28%) and fiber production (15%).

The fashion industry is the world’s second-largest polluter, after oil. Its impacts touches on waste, water, toxic chemicals and energy.

Over 50% of workers within the fashion industry are not paid the minimum wage in countries like India and the Philippines. (Global Fashion Agenda 2017)

Statistics from the Public Radio International show that garment workers in parts of the world such as India, Philippines, Malaysia, the Americas earn less than the national average wage $1,864.00 (USA) $194.00 (Sri Lanka).

Taylor Jay is making incredible strides to incorporate strategies that promote more environmentally, socially and ethically produced clothing. The company partners with an ethically sourced, fair labor practicing factory in Oakland, CA that produces environmentally safe garments from certified eco-friendly textiles.

With Taylor Jay, elevated fashion includes empowering women with beautiful, versatile, comfortable pieces, all eco-friendly and sustainable.
